The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, has debunked reports that he and the management of the institution are being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. There had been reports in some newspapers (Punch not inclusive) that Ambali was being investigated by the EFCC and that he was walked out by members of the House of Representatives Committee on Education during his defence of the university’s 2016 budget before the committee. The VC, who spoke with journalists in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on Saturday, also said he was not walked out during his defence of the budget before the committee. He stated that he presented the budget of the institution before the committee and it was well received.

A 35-year-old man allegedly murdered 14 members of his family including seven children with a butcher’s knife before committing suicide outside India’s financial capital of Mumbai, police said Sunday. The attack happened after family members gathered late on Saturday at one of their homes in Thane, some 32 kilometres (20 miles) from Mumbai, for a family function, police said. “The attacker, Hasnin Anwar Warekar, hung himself after slitting the throats of all other family members including his parents,” a Thane police spokesman, Gajanan Laxman Kabdule, told AFP.

The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, says the state government can transform the National Museum in the state to a cultural edifice of international standard, as well as rehabilitate other federal infrastructure, if the Federal Government partners the state. In a statement released by Clem Aguiyi, spokesperson to the embattled former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, the former minister, says she did not award $24 billion oil swap deals without a contract as alleged but only gave approvals for renewal of contracts, adding that said she would speak for herself in due time. Former group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Austen Oniwon, who earlier appeared before the ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives, had said the NNPC under Alison-Madueke granted $24 billion oil swap deals without a contract.

The Independent Taskforce on Monitoring of Feeding of IDPs in Maiduguri, Borno state -arrested a suspect for stealing foodstuffs meant for the refugees. The storekeeper in the Arabic Teachers College (ATC) IDP camp, was nabbed with foodstuffs meant for IDPs in the boot of his car as he attempted to smuggle them out of the camp. Upon interrogation by members of the Taskforce, he said he was a staff of Askira Uba LGA and Sulaiman Abba by name. Two ( 2) bags of rice, one (1) bag of flour and two (2) bags of sugar (25kg) were found in the boot of his car. Two members of the Civilian JTF in the camp who assisted in the arrest said Sulaiman Abba had been indulging in the act for quite some time now, stealing their foodstuffs on a daily basis.

There was outrage on Tuesday by pensioners of the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State after a local government pensioner, identified as Sunday Oboite, slumped and died during screening. It was learnt that Oboite, 75, died at the reception of the local government secretariat. It was gathered that the late pensioner, who retired from the Works department of the council, was at the secretariat for screening which the council had directed the pensioners to undertake before they would be paid their 10-month pension arrears.

South Africa, on Saturday, confirmed its first case of the dreaded Zika virus that has devastated much of Southern America.</> The virus, according to Reuters, was brought into South Africa by a Columbian businessman. He was found to have the viral disease during a visit to Johannesburg, says the Health minister. “The businessman presented with fever and a rash approximately four days after arrival in South Africa but is now fully recovered,” the minister said. This makes South Africa the first African country to confirm the disease, since the disease epidemic broke out last year. Although Zika was first discovered in Africa, there has been only 20, or less, recorded case of the disease in the continent since 2007. The World Health Organization (WHO) had on February 1, declared Zika a global public health emergency. Nigeria's anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday, debunked the viral report which stated that former director of the Directorate of Mili­tary Intelligence (DMI), General Letam Wiwa, was arrested and currently in its custody. EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, in response to an enquiry by Premium Times, said, "I can’t find any such detainee in our records. I can’t find anything on him."

According to a senior government official who exclusively disclosed to Premium Times, President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered an immediate investigation into allegations of fraudulent padding of allocations in the 2016 budget, with strict orders that all cases of discrepancies, errors and ambiguities be resolved promptly. It can be recalled that an extensive analysis of the budget exposed questionable details from the budget, with the National Assembly on Tuesday, suspending deliberations on the document indefinitely.

The intercepted illegal drugs According to a report on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service on Thursday, intercepted cannabis worth N150 million and arrested a suspect. The controller of Western Marine Command, Umar Yusuf, said the seizure was made on February 9 in Badagry, as he handed over the illicit drug and the suspect over to the Lagos commander of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Sule Aliyu. He disclosed that a 25-year-old suspect, Bala Mamudu, of Awuse village, Ojo, Lagos, was arrested. According to him, the team was liaising with other security agencies to check smugglers, adding that the command had repaired 14 of its patrol boats. Yusuf appealed to the customs authorities for more training of officers and men of the command, and assured that his team would never relent in the drive to ward off smugglers. He added that the seizure surpassed every seizure ever made by the command.

A man has been been burnt to death along muterla Mohammed high way by culvert, calabar. The incident which happened around 4:30pm today had a bus coming from watt market to eight miles burnt, although the driver and other passengers managed to escape, with injuries,and were rushed to the hospital but this man was said to have issues with his leg and could not rush out of the car and was caught up with the fire, and was burnt to death..the security men are around to keep thee place calm….
