Borno State government has equipped some private primary schools with scanning devices in order to beef up security at learning environments across the Maiduguri metropolis. The Chairman, Committee on the Resuscitation of Primary Education System, Dr. El-Nur Dongel, while presenting the scanners to some primary schools on Friday said the presentation of the scanning devices was to ensure security within the schools. He said the gesture was to complement efforts of the schools in ensuring proper checking at the entrance of the schools, urging the school managements to always be security conscious. He also extolled the noble efforts of the security agents and the Civilian JTF for curtailing activities of the insurgents within Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. The Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen Chris Olukolade, has said that troops have recaptured more towns from the members of the Boko Haram sect. Olukolade said in a statement on Friday that the troops handed out a crushing defeat to the insurgents and recovered the headquarters of Gulani Local Government Area of Yobe State, Bara, and the headquarters of Madagali Local Government area, Gulag, from them in the early hours of Friday. He said that the troops also flushed out terrorists from other locations such as Shikah, Fikayel, Tetebah, Buza, Kamla and Bumsa, during the two-day operation. According to Olukolade, many insurgents were killed in the fierce fighting that preceded the liberation of the communities. The Defence spokesman said that the troops recovered and destroyed several arms and ammunition, vehicles and other equipment. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has denied media reports that he deliberately arrived late at the birthday celebration of former President Shehu Shagari, after the departure of other past leaders and President Goodluck Jonathan. Presidential Campaign Organisation of the Peoples Democratic Party has alleged that a former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is plotting to become the President of Nigeria through what it called the back door. The Lagos state government has refunded N209m to students of the Lagos State University following the reversal of school fees by Lagos State University, LASU. At a ceremony held at the Main auditorium of the Ojo campus of the school yesterday February 26th, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Fatai Olukoga who represented Gov. Fashola, said this was the first phase in the refund exercise. He said the second phase of refund which is about N89 million will take place soon. 12 students were presented with cheques ranging from N150,000 to N200,000 while the remaining money will be paid to the accounts provided by the other students. The management of the school and the students had witnessed many months of protest following a hike in school fees until Governor Fashola intervened in September 2014 and ordered that the school fees be reversed.
